As one of Davis’s oldest neighborhoods, Olive Drive has retained a small-town feel of yesteryear. The community gets its name from the hundreds of mature olive trees that line the streets, staining the pavement purple when the fruits fall.
Olive Drive is located in zip code 95616. The community lies between the Amtrak train tracks to the north, and the Interstate 80 Freeway to the east and south. Downtown Davis is just a few blocks to the northwest.
Of the myriad reasons to live in the Olive Drive neighborhood is the UC Davis Arboretum, which is located to the southwest. This 100-acre botanical oasis features a wide variety of breathtaking gardens, including a conifer and desert garden, and an Australian collection.
Students living in Olive Drive appreciate the fact that UC Davis sits close by. This public research university was founded in 1905 as a farm-oriented extension of Berkeley. It was formally established as a university in 1959. The school offers undergraduate as well as graduate and professional programs in a wide variety of specialties, including medicine, law, education, and nursing. The campus covers 5,300 acres, and the university served a total of 32,153 students in 2010.
Kids enjoy visiting the many parks that surround the Olive Drive community, including Central Park, which lies to the northwest. The park features a basketball court, a horseshoe pit, a human-powered carousel, and fountains that light up at night. The southwest corner of the park is home to the U.S. Bicycling Hall of Fame, which features bicycles, and related memorabilia.
