The city of Davis is a college town. Nothing is more evident of this than the proximity of Downtown Core to the University of California, Davis.
Downtown Core is west of the campus, and is separated by B Street. Besides B Street and UC Davis, the neighborhood’s boundaries are 5th Street to the north; 1st Street to the south; and the Amtrak railroad to the east.
Downtown Core is the seat of local government. City Hall and the Chamber of Commerce are located on 2nd Street. Also, within a few blocks southwest of City Hall is the Yolo County Visitor Bureau.
Mass transit plays a critical role in the community. Amtrak is one of three train companies that pass through this city. The passenger train has a station on 2nd Street in the southeast corner of the community. In addition to the train service, there are bus stops on almost every corner throughout Downtown Core.
Another unique feature about the city of Davis is the quantity of bicycles. Davis is a “bike-friendly” city. Many of the roads throughout the city have bicycle paths with many leading toward the campus or to the various retail stores, restaurants or governmental offices throughout Downtown Core.
One other destination within the community is Central Park on the corner of 5th Street and B Street. This tree-lined park has several pedestrian and bicycle trails. On the park’s east end — off of C Street — are the facilities for Davis Farmer Market.
Still, this community’s main attraction is the college campus. With its own library, sports facilities, theaters, shops, radio station (KDVS 90.3 FM), and health center, it looks like a small town rather than a college campus.
