The residential community of San Gorgonio in San Bernardino gets its name from a towering attraction to the east. With an elevation above 11,000 feet, San Gorgonio Mountain is the tallest peak in Southern California. It also dominates the community’s skyline.
The neighborhood is a gateway to the mountains. Besides having a view of San Gorgonio Mountain, it has access to numerous mountain communities, such as Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake.
It is bound by Highland Avenue to the north, Victoria Avenue to the east, Baseline Street to the south, and Sterling Avenue to the west. The Foothill Freeway/Interstate 210 passes through the northeastern end of the community. It eventually connects with Highway 330, the main road to Big Bear Mountain and the San Bernardino National Forest. Highland Avenue also intersects this mountain highway.
Highland Avenue, Baseline Street, and Pacific Street are vital streets for this community. Not only do they connect the residents of San Gorgonio with other communities in the city and county of San Bernardino, they hold many of its shopping centers, schools, and parks.
Most of these attractions can be found on Highland Avenue. Just east of Sterling Avenue is San Manuel Indian Bingo and Casino Marketing Department. On the other side of Sterling/Highland intersection is the community’s largest retail outlet, Highland Plaza Shopping Center. One of three schools in the neighborhood, Emmerton Elementary School, is off of Highland on Arden Avenue.
Pacific Street is where the schools San Gorgonio High School and Banner Elementary School are located. Also, the street has parks such as San Bernardino Community Gardens and Belcher Park. The community garden is a place for residents to grow their own fruits and vegetables. Baseline Street leads to the mall, Highland Town Center.
