Pacific is an odd name to give a community in San Bernardino. Located in the northeastern part of the city and nestled between Perris Hill and the base of the San Bernardino Mountain Range, the community is nowhere near the vast blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. The residential community is more than 60 miles away from the ocean and is 1,046 feet above sea level.
Still, the name fits this community. Pacific Avenue is the main street. It runs the length of this residential community from East 21st Street — just west of Perris Hill — east to Victoria Avenue, as a border between it and the Highland community. Also, at the western end of the street, Pacific High School, the second oldest high school in San Bernardino, is located here.
Pacific High School was established in 1953. It was temporarily closed in 1983 due to low enrollment. Later, the school was reopened in 1990 and has been upgraded since then to meet the educational needs of a growing population.
This is not the only high school in the area. Further east on Pacific Avenue is San Gorgonio High School. The name for this school is more appropriate; it’s named after San Gorgonio Mountain, the highest peak in Southern California (11,499 feet above sea level). The snow-capped mountain — along with the San Bernardino National Forest — is a few miles away from this school.
This community is considered the mountain “gateway.” Its northern border, Highland Avenue (Highway 210), eventually merges with the Foothill Freeway (Interstate 210). It then breaks off to the north to become Highway 330 to Big Bear (currently, however, that road is closed due to a landslide).
The residents here may not see the ocean, but they have snow-capped mountains to enjoy and explore.
