Some 21,000 people call Loma Linda home. So does Ronald McDonald. In 1996 the Loma Linda Ronald McDonald House opened its doors to help families seeking treatment at the Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. This is the latest in a list of medical facilities at the forefront of disciplines such as proton cancer treatment and behavioral medicine. The North Central neighborhood borders this university.
The neighborhood stretches from Anderson Street in the west to Mountain View Avenue in the east. The northern border is Redlands Boulevard, and the southern is Van Leuven Street. Local bus service is available around the perimeter of the area, with the Anderson Street route leading to Loma Linda University’s main entrance.
Despite the international acclaim of the Loma Linda University and Medical Center, Loma Linda holds on to its small-town feel. It is also a town where healthy living goes beyond the doors of the Medical Center. In 1993, the entire city was declared smoke-free, a first for San Bernardino County.
Among the city parks convenient to North Central residents is Loma Linda Community Park in the southwestern corner of the neighborhood. Cottonwood Park is located on North Central’s eastern end, at Mountain View Avenue and Cottonwood Road. The closest dog park is to the south at Mountain View Avenue and Beaumont Avenue.
Redlands Boulevard is the commercial zone of the North Central neighborhood. Restaurants along this street include the Home Town Buffet and Napoli Italian, as well as fast-foot brands such as Del Taco and KFC. Other businesses include Enterprise Rent-A-Car and an assortment of car dealerships. Interstate 10 is one block north of Redlands Boulevard, providing easy freeway access to points east such as Palm Springs and west into Greater Los Angeles.
