Roughly halfway between Vallejo and Richmond, Pinole’s long and fascinating history dates back to 1772, but it wasn’t until the historic Fernandez Mansion was built in the 1850s that Pinole began to grow. In 1878, the Southern Pacific Railroad came to the area, and the city soon became the region’s commercial and banking center.

While Pinole features a wonderful downtown shopping area, its shoreline attracts visitors and residents alike. Point Pinole Regional Shoreline covers 2,315 acres of beaches, bluffs, meadows, and eucalyptus woods. Features include hiking and biking trails, a 1,250-foot fishing pier, a shuttle bus, and group camping. Point Pinole Regional Shoreline is the largest park on the bay’s northeast shore, with more than five miles of trails.

Other parks in Pinole include a dog park, Fernandez Park, and Pinole Valley Park, a 231-acre park with a playground, a baseball diamond, and a basketball court. Pinole also offers a swim center, a sports and fitness center, and a youth center. The Community Playhouse features a Children’s Theatre Workshop and youth programs.
