The neighborhood of Washington Square is located in the Orange County suburb of Santa Ana. Washington Square’s boundaries include North Bristol Street to the west, Civic Center Drive West to the south, North Flower Street to the east, and West 17th Street to the north. Washington Square is just two blocks away from the Santa Ana Freeway. Homes in this neighborhood were built in the 1940s.
There are two public elementary schools within Washington Square, Wilson Elementary School and Heroes Elementary School. Willard Intermediate School is just one block from the neighborhood. High school students have many options in Washington Square, including the Orange County High School of the Arts.
The community is located directly across from Santa Ana College and within a block of the Riverview Golf Course. Willowick Municipal Golf Course is just a few blocks farther. Other local neighborhoods include Willard, Flower Park, Floral Park, West Floral Park, Edna Park, and Fisher Park. The Bowers Museum of Cultural Arts is only a block away, as is the Old Courthouse Museum.
Santa Ana was named in honor of Saint Anne in 1769 by a Spanish expedition leader. It began as a cattle ranch. The city of Santa Ana was incorporated in 1886 and was designated the county seat of Orange County when it separated from Los Angeles in 1889. Santa Ana is the governmental and financial center of Orange County. It is also the largest city in the county and takes up 27.2 square miles.

More than 350,000 residents live within Santa Ana.
