Set amidst the San Joaquin Marsh and bird sanctuary, the community of San Joaquin Marsh offers residents an up-close view of wildlife. Spend some time in this peaceful community, and it’s hard to believe that a major research university and an airport are situated immediately outside the neighborhood.
Homes in the San Joaquin Marsh neighborhood tend to be high-rise condominiums built in the late 2000s to capitalize on the marsh views. The San Joaquin Marsh community encompasses ZIP code 92612. It is bounded by Michelson Drive to the north, Harvard Avenue to the east, University Drive to the south, and Campus Drive to the west. The area is primarily homes and marsh, although it has a few eateries, shops, and service establishments.
One of the many appealing aspects of this neighborhood is the marsh and bird sanctuary. The 170-acre marsh underwent restoration in the 1990s. At that time, a local developer reconfigured 100 acres of waterfowl ponds to attract nesting of migratory birds. The developer also planted 38 acres of native trees inside and adjacent to the marsh’s ponds and restored another 44 acres from non-native to native habitat.
Just outside the community, to the south, is the University of California, Irvine. This university was founded in 1965 and is dedicated to cutting-edge research and instruction. It has 28,000 students, 1,100 faculty members, and 9,000 staff members. Not far away, to the west, is John Wayne Airport. This airport covers 500 acres and serves both commercial and private aircraft. The airport was named for the late actor John Wayne, who lived in the area.
