Claimed in 1869 by Kentuckian William H. Spurgeon on land obtained from the descendants of Jose Antonio Yorba, Santa Ana was incorporated as a city in 1886 with a population of 2000, in 1889 became the seat of the newly formed Orange County and in 1988 became a charter city.
Today, the population of Santa Ana has grown considerably with a 2009 population of 355,662. Santa Ana has also grown considerably and now has several districts. The core district as well as the core of the city is Downtown Santa Ana. Housed in Downtown Santa Ana are retail stores as well as residential housing including several historic homes dating from the late 1800s. In addition, the Santa Ana Civic Center is housed downtown “which is a dense campus of administrative buildings for both the city and the county of Orange” as well as the Ronald Reagan Federal Building and Courthouse.
Downtown Santa Ana also has districts, one of them being the Historic Downtown District bound by Ross to French streets and First to Civic Center streets and is most notably home to three old movie houses: The West End, Fox West Coast and the Yost, among numerous other properties and businesses.
Another district in Downtown Santa Ana is Artists’ Village, which is home to various artists and institutions namely the Historical Santora building, the Cal State Fullerton Grand Central Art Center and the Orange County Center for Contemporary Art.
The Fiesta Marketplace is yet another district of Downtown Santa Ana created with only one goal in mind: to recreate a piece of Mexico in Santa Ana. What began as small stores and vendors, Fiesta Marketplace has transformed into a large shopping center and home to numerous private retail businesses.
Finally, the Civic Center Plaza area is home to the Santa Ana Civic Center, the Ronald Reagan Federal Building and Courthouse as well as other administrative buildings for the City and the County of Orange.
