The Artesia Pilar neighborhood is one of the oldest sections of Santa Ana. Located near Santa Ana College in the heart of the city, the area is dominated by working-class, Latino families drawn in by the moderate housing prices and accessibility to other areas of Orange County.
Artesia Pilar is in the 92703 ZIP code. Its boundaries are 17th Street on the north, 1st Street on the south, Fairview Street on the west and Bristol Street on the east. The majority of homes are older, having been built in the area’s post-war boom. Housing styles vary greatly in the area, with homes ranging from English Tudor to Spanish Colonial style homes. Most of the housing is single-family homes, although some apartments and condominium units are available near the college.
Located squarely in the middle of Artesia Pilar, El Salvador Park is a meeting place for many in the community. Located at the intersection of Civic Center Drive and Raitt Street, the 11-acre park has amenities for residents including a playground for children, picnic areas and plenty of open, green space. There are also several sports fields including baseball and softball diamonds, handball courts and basketball courts. The park’s recreation center hosts activities for children, adults and senior citizens throughout the year.
The main educational facility in the area is Santa Ana College, a two-year school offering associate’s degrees in a variety of subjects. Many residents attend classes at the college, while a host of restaurants, grocery stores and other shopping locations have blossomed around the school. The college has a large commuter presence, drawing students from around north Orange County. This has led to the development of several public transportation lines in Artesia Pilar, with Orange County Transportation Association bus lines making frequent trips to diverse stops including Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Tustin and Huntington Beach.
