Ontario, California began as an experiment of sorts – George Chaffey, an engineer from Ontario, Canada, came to California and decided to try and make something out of the desert. Deciding all it needed was a little water, he and his brother purchased 6,218 acres – along with the water rights. With an innovative method for the time – 1882 – Chaffey laid miles of cement pipe and had the San Antonio Water Company drive a tunnel into the underground flow. His innovative efforts paid off, and the city of Ontario began to grow.
