Monterey County, California

Steep, rocky cliffs bend and arc into a series of hidden coves and blunt points. The ocean crashes against the rocks in some spots, while calm and clear in the quiet alcoves. Big Sur is equally stunning and treacherous, and it is located in Monterey County. Highway 1 (Pacific Coast Highway), which stretches alongside some of the most beautiful coastline in the world, is also located in Monterey County. It is national icons such as these that make Monterey County an amazing place to call home.

Salinas, the county seat, is a beautiful city that inspired resident and Nobel Prize and Pulitzer Prize winner John Steinbeck, author of the novels Of Mice and Men, The Grapes of Wrath, and East of Eden. Historic downtown Salinas is picture-perfect and walker-friendly, consisting of unique shops and street-side cafes. With its rich soil and perfect weather, Salinas is an agricultural hub, producing a wide variety of fruits and vegetables, as well as several vineyards. More than 80 percent of the country’s lettuce is grown in Salinas, which is sometimes referred to as America’s salad bowl.

Famous Carmel-by-the-Sea is another famous Monterey County city. It is home to poets, artists, writers, actors – and their pets. Carmel is a very dog-friendly city and many restaurants and shops allow dogs. Located along the coast, Carmel has some interesting quirks and some equally interesting residents.

Other cities and towns in Monterey County include Del Rey Oaks, Soledad, Gonzales, Seaside, Sand City, Pacific Grove, King City, and Monterey. National protected areas include the Salinas River National Wildlife Refuge and parts of the Los Padres National Forest, Ventana Wilderness, and Pinnacles National Monument.
