The Verdugo Woodlands neighborhood is situated in a forested canyon between sharply rising hills in northeast Glendale. Originally an area of vacation homes, this California neighborhood was first developed in 1919 as Las Selvas de Verdugo, Verdugo Woods. The tree-lined streets and mountain views preserve a peaceful, secluded atmosphere.
Verdugo Woodlands’ single-family homes, condominiums, and apartments are set among native live oak, sycamore, and bay trees, as well as imported palms and purple-flowered jacarandas that serve as street trees. The neighborhood spreads out from pastoral Verdugo Park and the historic Verdugo Adobe, where one of the canyon’s first families lived. Some neighborhood streets spiral into the surrounding hills.
Verdugo Woodlands is bounded on the west by the Verdugo Mountains and on the east by the San Rafael Hills and the Glendale Freeway. The neighborhood is south of Oakmont Country Club and Montecito Park and north of the Greenbriar neighborhood and Rancho San Rafael. The zip code for Verdugo Woodlands is 91208.
Many homes and apartment buildings in Verdugo Woodlands remind residents of the Spanish heritage of the area, while others display the modern style popular when development intensified around the middle of the 20th century.
In spite of its out-of-the-way setting, Verdugo Woodlands has easy access to the Los Angeles Basin and San Fernando Valley via the Glendale and Foothill freeways. It is less than five miles from spectacular Griffith Park, with its observatory, zoo, and wilderness trails. The Alex Theatre in downtown Glendale is a poplar attraction, and the upscale Glendale Galleria Mall gets more visitors each year than Disneyland draws. For those who prefer Disneyland, it’s about 35 miles away.
