The Southwood neighborhood is in the small community of Torrance. In addition to the morning fog they experience, residents enjoy a constant sea breeze and a temperature that hovers around 70 degrees F, about 20 degrees below that of the rest of Southern California.
Southwood is only about a mile from the beach. Residents can walk, drive, or ride a bike on Palos Verdes Boulevard to the coast.
The community does not contain a lot of commercial establishments. Despite being between major streets such as Sepulveda Boulevard to the north and Pacific Coast Highway to the south, the Southwood neighborhood is cut off from much of the South Bay by hills and mini-valleys. The geography of the neighborhood was formed by the ancient El Segundo dune system near the base of the Palos Verdes Peninsula.
Children in Southwood families can attend the South Torrance High School. This secondary school has been noted as being on the forefront of public school education. Located on Pacific Coast Highway and Calle Mayor, the school has nationally recognized educational programs.
Several shopping centers are nearby. One is Del Amo Fashion Center, once the largest mall in the world.
While much of Southwood appears to be new, its past can be found at a park on Sepulveda. Wilderness Park is a small forest in the middle of a suburban sprawl. However, pictures in the park’s lodge show what it once was: a Nike nuclear missile launch site on top of a barren dune in the 1950s.
The Southwood neighborhood is noted for its annual holiday decorations. From dusk till dawn between Thanksgiving and News Year’s, residents on streets near Seaside Elementary School adorn their homes and lawns with Christmas lights and decorations. Many drivers throughout the Southland area arrive each year see this display of holiday spirit.
