An unincorporated area in the San Gabriel Valley, South Whittier is home to 55,285 people – the majority of whom are middle-class, working Latinos. It’s managed to retain a small-town feel despite being in an urban environment. There are many wide, tree-lined streets along with plenty of restaurants and entertainment options.
South Whittier incorporates the 90602 ZIP code. Its boundaries include Lambert Road on the north and the Imperial Highway on the south. The western boundary of South Whittier roughly includes Shoemaker Avenue and Greenleaf Avenues while the eastern boundary includes Leffingwell Road, Scott Avenue and Telegraph Road.
There are several outdoors sites in South Whittier for residents to enjoy. Adventure Park is a 15.5-acre complex opened by the County of Los Angeles in 1962, with a new gymnasium opened in July 2004. The park has a walking and exercise path along with new fitness equipment. There are fields for baseball, softball and soccer along with areas for picnics and BBQs. Adventure Park also has senior and teen programs.
The Candlewood Country Club is located just south of Adventure Park. The private, member-owned club includes an 18-hole golf course, clubhouse, restaurant and banquet hall.
South Whittier is a mixture of home owners and renters, with the majority of homes being moderate-sized three-bedroom to four-bedroom homes. Crime rates in South Whittier are lower than the averages for California and nationally. There are a range of restaurants in the area, including many at the Sante Fe Springs Plaza Shopping Center at the northeast corner of South Whittier. This mall offers many retail stores for residents along with a Ralph’s grocery store.
Residents of South Whittier have several educational options. The public high school in the neighborhood is California High School, while the Walker Academy is a private school teaching students from kindergarten through 12th grades.
