With its wide sidewalks and well-established home landscapes, San Rafael is considered a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood. The community was once part of a 36,000-acre Spanish Land Grant that encompassed native dry canyons and waterways. The area still retains much of its original rustic feel. San Rafael was named after the Saint Raphael, who is considered the guardian angel of humanity.
Home designs in Rancho San Rafael tend toward Contemporary Mediterranean-style single-family homes built throughout the 1990s. There is also a good selection of Mediterranean-style townhomes built during the same time period. Rancho San Rafael encompasses zip code 91208.
The community is bounded by Glendale Freeway (Route 2) and Gladys Mountain Way on the north, Cam San Rafael Road and East Chevy Chase Drive on the east, East Chevy Chase Drive on the south, and the Glendale Freeway (Route 2) on the west.
The area is primarily residential, although there are a variety of shops, restaurants, and service establishments located throughout the community.
Of the many appealing aspects of San Rafael is Chevy Chase Park, which is located along Chevy Chase Drive to the northeast. This facility features an auditorium with a seating capacity of 600 and lighted indoor basketball courts, lighted outdoor handball courts, an indoor gym, picnic tables and a children’s playground.
Just outside the community to the west and over the Glendale Freeway is the Glendale Community College. This two year educational institution was founded in 1927 and sits on 100 acres on the slopes of the San Rafael Mountains overlooking the valleys in Glendale. The college has approximately 35,000 students.
