Pedestrian-friendly streets and charming, ranch-style houses with tidy front lawns are only part of the Northwest Torrance residential neighborhood. Condominiums, townhouses, and tri-level apartment buildings bring a contemporary feel to housing dating back to the 1950s. It is not uncommon to see a tri-level apartment building or new construction blending in with a street full of older homes.
Families have been drawn to the community for decades. Pre-schools and private schools are in the area, along with the public elementary, middle, and high schools from the Torrance Unified School District. Most schools are within walking distance of the neighborhood.
McMaster Park is a small neighborhood park with a location close to the schools. Children and families can take a playground or picnic break without going outside of the neighborhood. For team sports, play areas are available for a friendly game of baseball or basketball. The North Torrance Library is a few steps away from McMaster Park. It is a small neighborhood library geared to young students who like its quiet atmosphere for studying.
The El Camino College campus is a close commute to Northwest Torrance by public transportation or automobile. Music, theater, and dance programs are held at the Marsee Auditorium, Campus Theater, and Robert Haag Recital Hall. Catch the “night sky” at the planetarium or stroll through the art gallery and anthropology museum on campus. Spectators can watch football or soccer at the 12,127-seat Murdock Stadium. The 2,000-seat gymnasium was the site of the 1991 Olympic Festival in soccer and wrestling.
Next door to El Camino College and minutes north of Northwest Torrance is the Alondra Park Golf Course in Lawndale. The California style course is an attractive 18-hole municipal golf course. The course was established in 2003, and its amenities include a pro shop and a coffee shop.
