Beach homes, modern high-rises, apartment buildings and hotels meet a strip of beach and one of the country’s largest small boat marinas in this coastal neighborhood. Marina del Rey is an unincorporated community bound by Venice (part of the city of Los Angeles) on the north and east, Playa del Rey to the south and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Marina del Rey is conveniently located 4 miles north of LAX. It is a short drive from the Marina Freeway, which connects the area to the 405 and other parts of the city.
The area is home to mostly well-heeled singles, some owners of boats in the harbor and members of the California Yacht Club based here. The area code is 90292.
Via Marina and Lincoln Boulevard are the main commercial arteries in the neighborhood. The University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, which regulates Internet addresses and domain names, are both based here as is the University of California Los Angeles Marina Aquatic Center.
The land was once undesirable marshland popular with duck hunters. In the mid-1800s, developers and government agencies sought to turn it into a commercial marina. It wasn’t until the 1950s that construction on a marina finally got going. The marina was completed in 1965.
Today, Fisherman’s Village, an outdoor mall area on the beach, is popular with residents and others throughout L.A. and the world, who come for the restaurants, shopping, biking, boat rentals and Fourth of July Fireworks.
