At the south end of wildly beautiful Upper Las Virgenes Open Space is the Calabasas neighborhood of Malibu Canyon. About ten miles inland from the beaches of Malibu, homes in the canyon sit amid hills covered with grassland and dotted with spreading oaks. The area contains single-family housing, condominiums, and upscale apartments.
The Malibu Canyon neighborhood is north of the Ventura Freeway and nearly surrounded by miles of protected parkland. Housing in the area clusters around the local school, Lupin Hill Elementary. Most apartments are found off Las Virgenes Road, many townhouses on Alizia Canyon Drive, and single-family homes throughout the area of Thousand Oaks Boulevard, east of Horseshoe Circle. The zip code for the area is 91302.
Lupin Hill School is part of the highly rated Las Virgenes Unified School District. Children from Lupin Hill attend Arthur E. Wright Junior High School and go on to Calabasas High School. The school district also offers an alternative independent study program. Pepperdine University, just down Las Virgenes Road in Malibu, is one of Los Angeles’ distinguished institutions.
Local shopping is nearby on Las Virgenes Road. Glitzy upscale shopping in central Calabasas is just one exit east on the Ventura Freeway. The Calabasas Civic Center, in the same area, is a modern and environmentally friendly facility. Its city library offers wireless Internet, online language learning, and historical society meetings. The civic center also hosts local public access TV.
The Upper Las Virgenes Open Space is the product of a community effort to prevent development that might have overwhelmed the area’s infrastructure and ecology. Many trails lace the park, opening it to all comers. Even for people who do not hike, mountain bike, or ride horses, the surrounding hills are what make the neighborhood of Malibu Canyon an ideal setting for a comfortable lifestyle.
