The residents of Madrona in Torrance live between two major attractions in the city. On one side of Madrona Avenue is Madrona Marsh Nature Preserve. On the other side is Del Amo Fashion Center.
Much of Madrona’s commerce is tied to the mall and businesses surrounding it. Del Amo has been a mainstay in the neighborhood since the 1960s and has gone through many transformations in order to remain relevant in the community. The latest has converted parts of the mall into an open-air venue. This particular venue is across from Madrona.
The other attraction—and namesake—is Madrona Marsh. Although greatly reduced from its original size, the preserve has become a nature park. It’s open to the public on two weekends per month and is staffed with volunteers guides who will lead visitors along several trails meandering through the wetland and help them avoid the many hidden ditches, wild animals, and a fragile ecosystem.
Madrona’s importance to the city is apparent. The center of the city’s government, the Civic Center, is across from it on Torrance Boulevard. City Hall, the main public library, public swimming pool, Armstrong Theater, a cultural center, Torrance Police station, and the Los Angeles County Courthouse are located there.
Torrance’s major streets go through this community. Its borders are Madrona Avenue to the west, Sepulveda Boulevard to the south, Torrance Boulevard to the North, and Crenshaw Avenue to the east. Carson Street, another major South Bay road, goes through its center. This particular street leads to Torrance High School, which was made famous by the TV shows Beverly Hills 90210 and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
Finally, there’s Madrona Middle School, on Madrona Avenue. It has been named as a California Distinguished School winner for academic excellence.
