El Monte City sits in the middle of the San Gabriel Valley, east of downtown Los Angeles. The name is Spanish for “meadow” or “the wooded place,” and it is literally a green oasis in the midst of an arid landscape. This is the place where rock and roll got its foothold in Southern California. City fathers from Los Angeles made it difficult to hold concerts in town, so the music traveled east to the El Monte Legion Stadium where both the Beach Boys and the Beatles made appearances.
Today El Monte is a quiet valley town with an assortment of housing options including single-family homes, townhouses, apartments, and mobile homes. The city center, which straddles Interstate 10, is made up mostly of homes built between 1940 and 1969, many with a Spanish-style influence. Later developments saw the emergence of both small and large apartment buildings. The area is urban, densely populated, and pedestrian-friendly.
El Monte residents have their choice of three shopping malls: the Five Points Plaza, El Monte Shopping Center, and Rosemead Square Shopping Center. The El Monte Airport is just north of the downtown and services small aircraft. To the north is the Arcadia Golf Course sitting on the west end of Peck Road Park Lake, a popular fishing spot for rainbow trout, bass, and catfish. Head south and tee off at the California Country Club or the Whittier Narrows Golf Course.
Nearby schools include El Monte Union High and Columbia Elementary, both north of Interstate 10. South of the interstate are the Willard F Payne Elementary and El Monte High. Houses of worship include Our Lady of Guadalupe, the Chinese Southern Baptist, and United Pentecostal.
