West Side Apartments for Rent

The West Side neighborhood is a lively urban area of Long Beach, California. Adjacent to a busy container shipping port, the West Side has long housed workers in heavy industry. Homes on the West Side include apartments and condominiums, as well as single-family houses.

Children attend Bethune, Garfield, Muir, or Webster elementary schools. The Long Beach Unified School District also has a magnet school program, through which students apply to attend schools outside their neighborhood. The magnet elementary school is Dooley. Neighborhood middle schools are Hudson and Stephens, while Perry Lindsay is the magnet middle school. Local high schools are Reid and Cabrillo. One magnet high school program is Polytechnic High School’s Pacific Rim Academy, and others are at Jordan High.

Downtown Los Angeles is about 20 miles away by freeway, but a light rail system combines with the subway to make commuting more efficient. Locally, Long Beach has water taxis that ply the beaches, and ferries that run to Catalina Island, as well as free transit within much of downtown Long Beach.

The Aquarium of the Pacific is remarkable. Its shark lagoon thrills children, and the Lorikeet Forest lets colorful tropical birds fly free to perch on visitors and eat from their hands. The Queen Mary, permanently moored onshore, is another attraction near the West Side. The beaches along with the sunset views from the beach-side bluffs are another permanent Long Beach attraction, and at night the view of the lights offshore is dazzling.
