Wilmington is best known as one of the world’s largest ports. The harbor area of Wilmington, located in the San Pedro Bay, covers many miles and is managed and maintained by the Los Angeles Harbor Department. The Wilmington neighborhood, zip code 90744, is roughly bordered on the south by Anchorage Road. The northern border is West Lomita Boulevard. The neighborhood is bordered on the west by Interstate 110, and the eastern border includes the refineries east of the Santa Ana River.
At the southern end of the Wilmington neighborhood, a green belt area runs from Figueroa Street to Lagoon Avenue. This large park has walking trails, playground equipment, and a large grass area that runs the length of the park. This park is adjacent to the Wilmington Recreational Center, which sponsors many neighborhood programs. The Banning Recreational Center, in the northern part of the neighborhood, has indoor basketball courts in the auditorium. The baseball field and tennis courts are illuminated for nighttime play. Families can picnic while the children play on the playground. Trails adjacent to the Santa Ana River stretch for miles, and are popular for walking and bike-riding.
There are several elementary schools in the Wilmington neighborhood. Older children can attend Phineas Banning Senior High and Wilmington Middle School. School children visit the Drum Barracks, the only Civil War building still standing in Southern California.
Housing in the Wilmington neighborhood is varied and includes single-family homes, apartments and multifamily dwellings. Bus service in this affordable neighborhood takes residents throughout Los Angeles County. Shopping and dining are abundant but, for a treat, unique shops, boutiques and trendy restaurants can be found nearby in downtown Long Beach or the Ports of Call Village in San Pedro.
