Guide to

Long Beach

Long Beach, CA Apartments for Rent

First, picture a beach: White sand, palm trees, the salty ocean breeze … then add a funky downtown complete with boutiques, sidewalk cafes, and brightly-painted murals on the sides of brick buildings. Now imagine a pyramid, the sun glinting off its shiny surface. Add in gondolas cruising down canals. Sprinkle in some bike paths, a few surfboards strapped to cars, pedestrians strolling or roller-blading down sidewalks, and a giant (some claim haunted) ocean liner. Where are you? Long Beach, of course!

Long Beach isn’t a sleepy seaside village. Long Beach is big and busy. It’s the only place where you can take a gondola ride, see a pyramid, go surfing, and visit an aquarium all in the same day. Long Beach is fun in the sun, but it is also a dynamic city – the second largest city in the LA area. It is home to one of the world’s largest shipping ports, the Port of Long Beach, and it is home to the University of California-Long Beach. Before you rent an apartment in Long Beach, learn more about this fast-paced, dynamic city!

Things to Do in Long Beach:

What’s it like living in a city that refers to itself as “a giant playground?” If you are planning to rent an apartment in Long Beach, you’re about to find out! Of course, there are the usual beach-related activities: swimming, surfing, water-skiing, sailing, and beachcombing.  There’s nearby Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles, just 22 miles away. The Walter Pyramid, located on the California State University-Long Beach campus, is a 5,000-seat arena where the Long Beach State 49ers basketball teams play. Long Beach Grand Prix is Long Beach’s largest event, with more than 200,000 people attending the street race.

In addition to being pedestrian-friendly, Long Beach is considered one of the nation’s most bicycle-friendly cities. Residents enjoy a variety of bike paths, including the Long Beach Bike Path, which extends from Shoreline Village to Belmont Shore. The Aquarium of the Pacific is another must-see. It contains more than 50 exhibits with over 11,000 animals. Of course, if you want to see animals in their Pacific Ocean habitat, go on a whale tour! You may even spot a Blue Whale, the world’s largest mammal. The Pacific Ocean is also home to Humpback Whales, Orcas, and Minke Whales. Other mammals you might spot include sea lions, sea birds, and dolphins. Bird-watchers will appreciate El Dorado Park and Nature Center, which also offers fishing, a disc golf course, a roller hockey court, skate park, picnic areas, pedal boats, and a radio-controlled model sailboat area.

Long Beach is also home to museums, art walks, the Long Beach Museum of Art, the Banning Museum (built 1864), and the Queen Mary. The Queen Mary started out as a luxury cruise liner in the 1930s. It became a troopship in WWII and sailed its last voyage in 1967. Shop, dine, or even arrange to stay the night in one of the state rooms. Looking for a fun night out? Visit the Observation Bar – an art deco bar (once the First Class Lounge) that offers amazing views.

What to Consider When Moving to Long Beach:

Although Long Beach is considered a “City of Neighborhoods,” they aren’t exactly defined – or recognized by the city. Downtown Long Beach is the exciting waterfront area that is very pedestrian-friendly and home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and businesses. Downtown is also home to the East Village Art District, the ideal shopping and dining destination.

4th Street is called “Retro Row,” and this is the ideal neighborhood if you enjoy vintage clothing stores, trendy boutiques, art galleries, wine bars, coffee shops, and hip venues such as the Art Theater, a historic building dating to the 1920s — a great place to see the latest art film, live concert, or comedy event.

On the flip side, Bixby Knolls is a traditional California neighborhood, complete with big houses along tree-lined streets. Families stroll along the sidewalks in the evenings, pushing strollers and stopping to chat with neighbors. Bixby Knolls also features trendy shops and restaurants, a variety of community events, and the Virginia Country Club.

Belmont Shore is the ideal area for those who want to live at the beach – literally. This seaside neighborhood hosts a collection of gift shops, boutiques, restaurants, bakeries, and taverns – many of them waterfront. Residents take advantage of the ocean breeze and enjoy walking, biking, and jogging along the streets.

Cambodia Town is home to many Cambodian American families and businesses. This uniquely diverse neighborhood is home to restaurants, shops, authentic grocery stores, gift shops, and an annual cultural festival. Cambodia Town covers about one mile along Anaheim Street.

Why Long Beach Apartments Are Hot:

This beachside city is just minutes from Los Angeles and Disneyland. Long Beach is one of the most walkable cities in the country, and it is ideal for biking with miles of trails. Long Beach is perfect for beach lovers as much as it is for art lovers. Long Beach is fun, and sun, and endless possibilities. When you rent an apartment in Long Beach, you can take a helicopter ride … dine aboard a luxury ocean liner … take a ride on a riverboat … visit nearby Catalina Island … tour an aquarium … go on a cruise … have a deep-sea adventure … take a gondola ride … and visit a pyramid.
