This neighborhood enjoys a rich heritage. To the north of the community, residents and tourists can visit Old Fort Lowell, a historic site with a museum open on Fridays and Saturdays. Fort Lowell was an Army post in the heyday of the Old West, built to protect settlers and wagon trains.
Soldier Trail is at the base of the Santa Catalina Mountains. This five mile trail leads over a challenging path to an old prison camp. Though the camp is gone, the view is worth the trip. Picturesque views include the wildlife of the Sonoran Desert. This trail leads into Soldier Canyon where seasonal waterfalls add to the already magnificent view.
Another attractive element to the Valle Escondido neighborhood is the Roy P. Drachman-Agua Caliente Regional Park. Agua Caliente is a unique oasis named for the warm spring that runs through the park, bringing warm water to the park ponds. The park features a variety of tree and shrub life, from date palms to mesquite and wolfberry. It offers a view of both the Santa Catalina and Rincon Mountain ranges.
