Barrio Ochoa is a rather small, picturesque community in southwestern Tucson. It’s bordered to the north by 22nd Street and to the south by West 26th Street. South 10th Avenue serves as the western border of Barrio Ochoa, and South 6th Avenue serves as its eastern border.
Santa Rosa Park is a popular park at the northern border of Barrio Ochoa. The massive Sentinel Peak Park is to the west of the community. Many parks dot the area surrounding the neighborhood, including Santa Rita Park (with its frequently visited swimming pool), Ornsby Park, and Five Points Park.
Barrio Ochoa is a college town in many ways, due to its proximity to the University of Arizona, which is located within walking distance to the north of the neighborhood. Several schools within the university are located on the campus. Arizona State University, Pima Community College, and the Arizona Bible College & Seminary are also near Barrio Ochoa.
The University of Arizona Poetry Center is one of the most popular and acclaimed academic locales for poetry in the U.S. Its library, conferences, workshops, readings and other special events centered around poetry bring poets from all over the country and beyond to the neighborhood.
The Jewish History Museum is within walking distance to the north of Barrio Ochoa as well. It is a rich museum full of important historical artifacts and information. People come from all over the state and country for the museum, and it is easily accessible from anywhere in the neighborhood. Tucson’s Children’s Museum, which marries education with entertainment in its many exhibits, is only a mile north of the community.
