Tempe, AZ Apartments for Rent

A deep gorge in Greece, containing a winding river and sheer cliffs, was the inspiration for Tempe, Arizona’s name. The Vale of Tempe is so beautiful it was once believed that the Greek God Apollo and the Muses liked to hang out there. Tempe is tucked into the East Valley, an area surrounded by mountains. And while the landscape may be inspiring, the city is equally so. This fast-growing city is also a college town, home to Arizona State University. If you’re looking at apartments in Tempe, get ready to live in a stunning, busy city.

Before it was Tempe, it was Hayden’s Ferry. When Arizona was still a territory, the US Military established Fort McDowell to allow settlers to move along the Salt River. The ferry, operated by Charles T. Hayden, was the main river-crossing in the area. This was the first area permanently settled in Arizona in 1865. Phoenix was settled soon after, around 1867. The name Tempe was adopted in 1879.

Arizona State University is the largest public university in the nation. ASU enrolls more than 50,000 students at its Tempe campus, with several satellite campuses enrolling thousands more. ASU is a top-ranking research university with 16 colleges and more than 250 undergraduate programs and 100 graduate programs. The Arizona State Sun Devils participate in NCAA Division I as part of the Pacific-12 Conference. The football team plays at Sun Devil Stadium, the basketball team at Wells Fargo Arena, and the baseball team at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.

Your apartment in Tempe will place you just east of Phoenix – and while Tempe is technically a suburb, this busy college town has an enviable live-work-play environment. Tempe is home to several businesses, including Insight Enterprises, First Solar, LifeLock, Go Daddy, Salt River Project, and Circle K. It is close to the Phoenix Zoo, the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, and South Mountain Park.

You’ll find plenty to see and do when you move to a Tempe apartment! While it is located in the desert, Tempe is home to Tempe Town Lake, a popular destination for boating, fishing, canoeing, and paddle-boarding. The lake also serves as a town center of sorts – a variety of activities are held here year-round, including the Pot of Gold Music Festival, the Arizona Dragon Boat Festival, the Fantasy of Lights Boat Parade, and Summer Ends Music Festival. Triathlons and 5Ks are also held in the park.

When you want to take a cooking class, there’s only one place to go – Hackett House! This historic house was built in 1888 and is located in Downtown Tempe. Today, it hosts events, cooking classes, and programs for kids. Another historic location you’ll want to know about is the Hayden Flour Mill. This mill was originally built in 1874, but that building was lost to a fire and was replaced by a new mill in 1895 – which was also lost to a fire. The current mill was built in 1918 and was designed to be fireproof. It was one of the longest-used mills in the country, finally ceasing operations in 1998.

After finding an apartment in Tempe, you can visit a museum – or just walk around Downtown Tempe! Downtown features more than 70 public works of art, located throughout the area. No matter where you go downtown – parks, neighborhoods, walking paths, even bus stops – you’ll see beautiful works of art, designed to make Downtown Tempe even more beautiful.
