La Plaza Vieja, also known as “Old Town,” is the most historical section of Flagstaff, Arizona. The centrally located neighborhood, originally built around the “Old Town Spring,” is located west of historic downtown Flagstaff. This section of town is also northwest of the Northern Arizona University campus and edged by old Route 66.
This neighborhood has an active group of residents who are planning a positive future for La Plaza Vieja. Plans have been made to maintain the historical sense of the neighborhood, while creating a neighborhood with a safe pedestrian and biking environment. They are also looking to create a community feel with social, cultural, and recreational programs that celebrate the diversity of the area. The planning includes a community center.
Plaza Vieja Park is an excellent place to relax and enjoy the fresh, clean air. Park benches provide comfort for the weary walker or neighborhood friends to sit and share an hour or two. Old Town Springs Park is for the more active resident. Besides the picnic ramada with a grill and the historical spring it is named for, there is also a half basketball court and a playground. Clay ball park provides recreation for the ball players in the community.
Outdoor activities are not far away from La Plaza Vieja. The National Forest offers free, guided walks at The Nature Conservancy’s Hart Prairie Preserve. White water rafting is also nearby. Right next door, the historic downtown area features pedestrian-friendly streets, art shops, restaurants. More opportunities are available at the university, where there is an on-campus art museum, as well as entertainment via the performing arts, symphony, and athletic events.
