The University of South Alabama Medical Center is two miles to its northeast, and Springhill Medical Center is four miles to its east.

Stone Ridge at Somerby Park is a half-mile south of Thornhill. Cottage Hill Park is one and a half miles to its southeast. It has baseball diamonds, a soccer field, a multiple-use sports field, tennis courts, hiking trails, a disc golf course, a jogging track, and picnic tables.

The Mobile Regional Airport, which hosts several major carriers such as Delta and Continental Airlines, is two and a half miles west of the community. It sometimes hosts cultural and artistic events for Mobile residents and travelers. The Mobile Aerospace Field is two miles to its northwest.

Although the neighborhood consists mostly of houses, several restaurants are within walking distance. A Subway Sandwich store is located at its western border, while Cambino Brothers and Peking Restaurant are located at its eastern border. Cici’s Pizza, Wintzell’s Oyster House, and McAllister’s Deli are at the northern end of the community.
