The neighborhood is close to the cultural events in Birmingham. As Northern Alabama’s only professional, regional company, Opera Birmingham was founded in 1955. World-class operatic productions and concerts are performed by Opera Birmingham and the Opera Birmingham Chorus at the Wright Center of Samford University. Through its Educational Tour, Opera Birmingham introduces local school children to the opera with one-act productions of Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and Gretel, and The Three Little Pigs. More than 30 Birmingham schools have benefited from the Educational Tour.
The Alabama Ballet began in 1981 and is known as an outstanding ballet company in the United States and abroad. The company has 22 principal dancers and 13 apprentices. The New York Times in a 2006 article referred to this group as first-class. The Alys Robinson Stephens Performing Arts Center is home to the Alabama Ballet.
