Kingston is an older neighborhood located just outside of downtown Birmingham, Alabama. It is framed by the major roads Messer Airport Highway to the south, Interstate 20 to the north, and 40th Street to the west.

Numerous major roadways, including several freeways, make Kingston highly accessible and the entertainment options are limited purely by desire to travel. In fact, there is even a major international airport located only about a mile north at Birmingham Shuttlesworth International Airport. If driving by vehicle just isn’t fast enough, the airport provides transportation throughout the country and the world on numerous major airlines.

Kingston has definitely seen its fair share of history. With the large majority of the homes here built in the early 1900s, just the buildings themselves tell the tale of the city. There are however a number of other major historical sights that are important parts of city history. To the north are Forest Hill Cemetery and Greenwood Cemetery, where many of the earliest settlers were buried. The cemeteries tell the history of the region one stone at a time.

To the south off Airport Highway is where Hayes High School used to stand. This school was one of the many all black schools during the time of segregation. It was also where professional basketball player Buck Johnson went to high school.

Near the grounds of the old Hayes High School site is the North Avondale Public Library. The library is known for hosting a number of groups, such as one for teens, parents, and a variety of other activities. The library also hosts a number of events meant to get residents excited about reading and help enrich the community.
